Question 2: How have Catastrophic Geological Events like Earthquakes Impacted Society?
In this Inquiry assignment, we are all working on the same question: How have catastrophic geological events like earthquakes impacted society? Your task is to research a major earthquake, tsunami or volcano that has had a major effect on a society. You must not only find out what happened to cause the event but your major focus should be on how the event has impacted the people that live in that area.
Some examples of major events are:
The 2010 Haitian earthquake
The 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami
The 2004 Asian Tsunami
The 1960 Chilean Earthquake (largest ever recorded)
Part One: Research
Research your event. Record your jot notes in your notebook. Please use at least four different sources (these can include websites, books or videos). Your best online information will come from newspaper and magazine articles, avoid using sites like Wikipedia and Ask.com. Record all sourcing for your research using Son of A Citation Machine.
For this project, you will present your information to me only. You may choose how you would like to present it to me in one of the following ways or you can also find your own way (but please run it by me first).
You can create a fictional story about your event and it's impact and then present it in Graphic Novel form. You can illustrate the Graphic Novel yourself or use one of the online tools below to create it.
2. You can create your own non fiction book about the event. This would include written parts, chapters, images and captions. This can be done on iGo
3. A visual time line of events. This would include illustrations and words and a description of events.
Here is an example of a visual timeline
4. Create a digital multimedia presentation about your event. There are many Web 2.0 tools to help you do this. Here are a few examples
Animoto – Anyone can feel like a producer by creating free 30 second videos with text, pictures, and music.
Capzles - Capzles is a multimedia tool for creating timelines with images, descriptions, backgrounds and music selections. Teachers may create a group log in for collaborative projects.
